DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal on March 12, 2018, urging both the central and Tamil Nadu governments to initiate immediate administrative and legal measures to secure the early release of A.G. Perarivalan and other convicts who had spent over twenty-six years in prison in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Stalin noted that prolonged incarceration far exceeding standard life terms raised profound humanitarian and human rights concerns that demanded urgent governmental resolution.
Stalin pointed out that multiple investigative revelations, legal precedents, and exemplary prison conduct strongly supported the longstanding compassionate plea of the convicts and their aging families, particularly Perarivalan's tireless mother, Arputham Ammal. He stressed that justice must be tempered with humane consideration, especially when inmates have already served more than a quarter of a century behind bars under rigorous confinement conditions.
The DMK leader urged the state cabinet to utilize its constitutional authority under Article 161 to recommend full remission of sentences to the Governor. Stalin reiterated that the DMK has consistently championed human rights and prison reforms, calling for decisive executive compassion without further procedural delays.
