DMK working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin led DMK legislators in a high-profile demonstration on March 15, 2018, wearing black shirts and staging a complete walkout during the state budget presentation in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The coordinated protest registered fierce opposition against both central and state governments for failing to take proactive measures to constitute the Cauvery Management Board as mandated by the Supreme Court of India.
Stalin stated that presenting financial estimates held little meaning when the foundational agrarian livelihood of millions of delta farmers remained under severe jeopardy due to executive inaction. He criticized the ruling dispensation for its passive stance toward central delays, pointing out that time was running out on the judicial deadline. Stalin explained that the black shirts symbolized the grief, anger, and defiance of Tamil Nadu's agrarian communities.
The DMK leader asserted that democratic protests inside and outside the legislature were vital to shake governmental complacency. He reiterated that the DMK will not participate in routine legislative rituals while farmers suffer without water. Stalin vowed that the party's statewide resistance would continue unabated.
