DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced fierce condemnation on March 20, 2018, following the cowardly desecration of a statue of Thanthai Periyar at Alangudi in Pudukkottai district. Stalin condemned the miscreants who struck like nocturnal thieves in the dead of night, noting that such acts exposed the sheer spinelessness of reactionary elements who lack the courage to confront the rationalist movement openly in broad daylight.
Stalin emphasized that Thanthai Periyar enabled millions of Tamils to live with unbending self-respect, educational access, and social equality by shattering centuries of systemic caste subordination. Vandalizing stone memorials, he asserted, can never extinguish the living rationalist consciousness and emancipatory philosophy that Periyar permanently embedded in the collective conscience of Tamil Nadu across generations of dedicated social activism.
The DMK leader demanded the immediate arrest and stringent prosecution of the conspirators responsible for the Alangudi attack under rigorous criminal statutes. He urged the state government to demonstrate administrative competence by preventing targeted provocations designed to disturb communal harmony. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will steadfastly honor and protect Periyar's transformative legacy against all forms of reactionary vandalism.
