DMK working president M.K. Stalin extended complete solidarity on March 26, 2018, to the spontaneous, widespread public agitation launched by residents of Thoothukudi against the hazardous operations of the Sterlite copper plant. Stalin commended the peaceful mobilization of local citizens, women, traders, and environmental activists who took to the streets to warn the government of the catastrophic health and ecological dangers posed by the industrial unit.
Stalin urged the state administration to categorically deny all approvals and environmental clearances sought for the proposed expansion of the Sterlite facility. He noted that the existing plant had already inflicted severe air pollution and contaminated groundwater sources, creating widespread public distress and serious health complications for local communities.
The DMK leader criticized the state government for its indifferent response toward the peaceful demonstrators. Stalin emphasized that the government was duty-bound to protect the constitutional right to clean air, safe water, and life itself. He affirmed that the DMK would stand firmly with the protesting citizens of Thoothukudi, demanding that the authorities reject expansion plans and safeguard public health and environmental integrity without compromise.
