DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on March 26, 2018, that the state government take decisive steps to permanently shut down the Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi if it continued to pose a persistent threat to public health and the local environment. Stalin stated that the lives and well-being of ordinary citizens were paramount and could never be sacrificed to satisfy commercial interests or corporate profits.
Stalin observed that toxic emissions and industrial effluents from the copper plant had generated widespread respiratory illnesses, groundwater contamination, and environmental degradation across neighboring residential areas for decades. He condemned the ruling AIADMK government for failing to enforce stringent environmental standards and ignoring the desperate pleas of thousands of families protesting on the streets.
The DMK leader insisted that administrative authorities must put an immediate stop to activities that endangered innocent human lives. Stalin asserted that industrial development could never be pursued at the cost of public health and ecological safety. He declared that the DMK would firmly champion the rights of the people of Thoothukudi until toxic operations were permanently halted and public safety was guaranteed.
