DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the central BJP government on March 27, 2018, for high-handedly granting environmental clearance to the contentious India-based Neutrino Observatory project across Theni district and the Western Ghats. Stalin stated that the unilateral decision flouted widespread local objections and ignored serious environmental warnings regarding the protection of the fragile Western Ghats ecosystem and local agrarian livelihoods.
Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government immediately file an appeal before the National Green Tribunal against the clearance granted by the central environmental appraisal committee. He stressed that executing high-energy particle physics experiments requiring deep underground blasting in an ecologically vulnerable mountain range posed severe ecological hazards to surrounding villages and farming belts.
The DMK leader pointed out that the central government had pushed the project forward without genuine public consultation or addressing community fears regarding environmental and seismic impacts. Stalin asserted that Tamil Nadu must not be treated as a testing ground for hazardous initiatives. He pledged that the DMK would pursue all legal and political avenues to prevent the implementation of the hazardous Neutrino project across Theni district and the Western Ghats.
