DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on March 27, 2018, an immediate stay on all implementation activities connected with the India-based Neutrino Observatory project in Theni district until an appellate authority delivered a final verdict. Stalin severely criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam for their conspicuous silence and total indifference to regional environmental safety and citizen welfare.
Stalin called upon the state leadership to provide an immediate, transparent explanation to the people of Tamil Nadu regarding their failure to challenge central clearances. He pointed out that local farmers, environmental activists, and civil society groups had voiced serious concerns regarding potential groundwater depletion, seismic instability, and ecological destruction in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats.
The DMK leader insisted that the state administration must prioritize the safety of its citizens above political subservience to the central government. Stalin urged the government to halt all preparatory ground work and approach appropriate appellate tribunals without delay. He reaffirmed that the DMK would firmly stand beside the residents of Theni to protect their native environment from hazardous central projects.
