DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a scathing statement on March 30, 2018, condemning the central BJP government and the ruling AIADMK dispensation for committing a historic betrayal against the people of Tamil Nadu by allowing the Supreme Court's six-week deadline for establishing the Cauvery Management Board to lapse. Stalin pointed out that despite clear judicial orders, the Union government had willfully evaded its statutory responsibilities.

Stalin criticized the state administration for committing a double betrayal by refusing to exert meaningful political pressure on the Centre throughout the six-week period. He noted that the ruling party in Chennai had sacrificed the vital interests of delta farmers simply to preserve its own unstable governance through backroom compromises with New Delhi.

The DMK leader asserted that the deliberate stalling of the Cauvery board posed an existential threat to millions of farming households dependent on seasonal river flows. Stalin declared that the Tamil people would never forgive this calculated injustice. He affirmed that the DMK would mobilize public sentiment across every district to compel both governments to comply fully with binding judicial mandates and legal directives.
