#BharatBandh https://t.co/k6v9WhACBj

DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the indiscriminate violence unleashed against Dalit demonstrators during the nationwide Bharat Bandh on April 3, 2018. The nationwide shutdown had been organized by Dalit and progressive organizations protesting against the dilution of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act following recent judicial interpretations. Stalin declared that brutal attacks on citizens peacefully defending their constitutional rights were deeply abhorrent.
Stalin emphasized that the protections afforded by the Constitution of India were hard-won guarantees designed to shield historically marginalized communities from caste violence, systemic prejudice, and institutional discrimination. He insisted that the legal provisions and deterrent mechanisms embedded within the SC/ST Act must never be weakened or diluted under any administrative pretext.
The DMK leader called upon state and central authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for perpetrating violence against peaceful protesters. Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's unwavering ideological commitment to Periyar's principles of social justice, human dignity, and equality. He urged all progressive parties to unite resolutely to protect the vital statutory safeguards of oppressed communities from regressive judicial or executive dilution.
