DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on April 6, 2018, that the Union Ministry of Health immediately withdraw its directive mandating the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, known as NEET, for admissions into traditional Indian medicine courses under AYUSH. Stalin condemned the move as an aggressive continuation of the central government's ongoing drive to usurp state powers and dismantle constitutionally guaranteed social justice principles.
Stalin asserted that the arbitrary imposition of uniform entrance examinations violated the principles of state autonomy, equitable representation, and administrative federalism. He explained that forcing rural students aspiring to study Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy to clear a centralized test would systematically exclude candidates from disadvantaged rural backgrounds who lacked access to expensive urban coaching centers.
The DMK leader pointed out that traditional healthcare systems, particularly Siddha medicine, were deeply embedded in Tamil culture and local heritage. Stalin pledged that the DMK would fiercely oppose any regulatory framework that curtailed state jurisdiction over medical education. He demanded that the Union government respect state rights and restore decentralized admission procedures for all traditional healthcare curricula.
