DMK working president M.K. Stalin led a massive gathering at Mukkombu in Tiruchirappalli on April 7, 2018, flagging off the statewide Cauvery Rights Retrieval March to demand the prompt creation of the Cauvery Management Board. Addressing thousands of farmers and party workers assembled at the upper barrage, Stalin stated that the struggle was essential to compel the central government to implement the Supreme Court verdict on river water sharing.
Stalin highlighted that the agricultural economy of the Cauvery delta had suffered severe damage owing to seasonal water deficits and political prevarication by New Delhi. He pointed out that the unified demonstration of political parties and civic organizations at Mukkombu demonstrated the resolute unity of the people of Tamil Nadu in defending their vital natural resources.
The DMK leader called upon all sections of society to extend sustained moral and active backing to the ongoing campaign. Stalin affirmed that the padayatra would carry the grievances of delta farmers through major towns and rural belts, vowing that the DMK would continue leading peaceful public demonstrations until the statutory Cauvery board was officially notified.
