DMK working president M.K. Stalin inaugurated the Cauvery Rights Retrieval March from Mukkombu near Tiruchirappalli on April 7, 2018, joined by senior leaders and thousands of dedicated cadres from various allied political parties. Launching the united march, Stalin declared that establishing the Cauvery Management Board had become non-negotiable to safeguard the livelihood of millions of Tamil Nadu farmers and citizens. He urged people across all walks of life to rise above partisan boundaries to defend their collective civil rights.
Stalin stressed that the prolonged delay by the Union government in constituting the statutory board flouted Supreme Court rulings and betrayed agrarian communities. He noted that when the rightful entitlements of a state were disregarded by New Delhi, persistent and disciplined democratic struggle represented the only viable recourse.
The launch of the padayatra witnessed an energetic assembly of political organizations, peasant unions, and civil society groups rallying behind Stalin's leadership. Stalin affirmed that the march would traverse the heartland of the delta to awaken public conscience, vowing that the movement would persevere until Tamil Nadu's constitutional water rights were definitively secured.
