DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal on April 8, 2018, calling on the Tamil Nadu administration to participate actively in the southern finance ministers conclave scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram on April 10. Convened by the Kerala government, the high-level meeting brought together regional finance ministers and leading economists to deliberate on the adverse repercussions of the 15th Finance Commission terms. Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu was among the hardest hit by the proposed federal distribution criteria.
Stalin noted that the reliance on 2011 census data unfairly penalized states that had invested heavily in population stabilization, healthcare improvements, and social welfare infrastructure over several decades. He stressed that without robust united resistance from peninsular states, Tamil Nadu would experience severe budgetary contractions that would undermine public development expenditure.
The DMK leader underscored that institutional participation was essential to articulate Tamil Nadu's fiscal concerns clearly before the Union government. He affirmed that proactive statesmanship required joining hands with fellow southern leadership to safeguard legitimate revenue rights. Stalin pledged that the DMK would maintain unwavering vigilance to ensure Tamil Nadu's economic sovereignty remained protected against central financial encroachments.
