DMK working president M.K. Stalin on April 9, 2018, issued a stern statement warning against systematic attempts to import vice-chancellors from other states to head Tamil Nadu's public universities. Stalin asserted that Tamil Nadu, as the pioneer of state autonomy and social justice in modern India, possessed abundant academic talent and scholarly expertise within its own borders to lead its premier higher educational institutions.
He condemned what he characterized as a calculated strategy by right-wing forces to bring state universities under central ideological influence through handpicked gubernatorial appointees. Stalin stated that any hidden agenda to saffronize Tamil academia, alter curriculum frameworks, or dilute progressive social values would be vehemently rejected by the student community and civil society. He pointed out that imposing external administrators alienated faculty and students alike.
The DMK leader demanded that the state government actively defend higher education autonomy from central encroachment. He affirmed that the DMK would firmly resist any effort to subordinate state universities to ideological directives from New Delhi, insisting on merit-based, transparent academic leadership that honored regional linguistic and cultural traditions and preserved institutional autonomy for coming academic generations.
