DMK working president M.K. Stalin met agriculturalists and village elders at Devarkandanallur in Tiruvarur district on April 10, 2018, as part of the ongoing Cauvery Rights Retrieval Yatra. Stalin listened attentively to the deep concerns expressed by local farming communities regarding severe groundwater depletion and consecutive seasonal crop losses resulting from the withholding of Cauvery water.
The cultivators explained that unseasonal drought conditions and dry canals had ruined agricultural employment across the delta heartland, creating widespread financial destitution among smallholder families. Stalin affirmed that the DMK launched this extensive foot march specifically to carry the legitimate grievances of delta farmers directly to national attention. He stressed that agriculturalists deserved reliable water allocations as an inviolable right rather than discretionary charity.
Stalin emphasized that the legal battle for the Cauvery Management Board was intrinsically tied to the economic survival of Tamil Nadu's rural population. He pledged that the DMK and allied democratic forces would maintain their unyielding agitation until the Union government fulfilled its constitutional mandate by constituting an autonomous, fully empowered river management board to protect agrarian futures and restore economic security across all delta households.
