DMK working president M.K. Stalin on April 10, 2018, strongly condemned the Tamil Nadu police for unleashing a brutal baton charge and carrying out widespread arrests against democratic activists protesting peacefully outside the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The demonstrators were opposing the conduct of IPL cricket matches in the city while the entire state was engaged in an existential struggle for Cauvery river water.

Stalin termed the violent police crackdown shameful and completely unwarranted, accusing the AIADMK administration of deploying coercive force to silence legitimate public dissent. He stated that rather than representing the collective agony of the state before the Union government, the ruling regime was using the police machinery to suppress peaceful democratic agitations and divert attention away from the central government's failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.

The DMK leader demanded the immediate, unconditional release of all detained protesters and urged authorities to withdraw criminal cases registered against them. He demanded that all fabricated charges against peaceful democratic demonstrators be dropped immediately. Stalin cautioned the state government that state-sponsored intimidation would never extinguish the democratic resolve of the Tamil people to secure their rightful water resources.
