DMK working president M.K. Stalin on April 10, 2018, issued a statement strongly condemning the isolated physical attacks perpetrated against some spectators attending the Indian Premier League cricket match in Chennai. Stalin emphasized that while public anger against the holding of sporting spectacles during a severe agricultural crisis was understandable, violence against ordinary cricket enthusiasts was entirely unacceptable.
He underscored that the Dravidian movement had always adhered to the foundational principles of peaceful, democratic agitation established by Periyar and Anna. Stalin pointed out that resorting to physical intimidation or assault only harmed legitimate public causes by diverting moral focus away from genuine political grievances. He asserted that any movement fighting for constitutional water rights must maintain strict nonviolent discipline to retain widespread moral legitimacy and broad civic support.
The DMK leader called upon youth, political cadres, and civil society demonstrators to express their dissent exclusively through lawful and nonviolent methods. He reaffirmed that victory in mass struggles belonged solely to movements anchored in moral righteousness, urging everyone to keep the Cauvery agitation strictly peaceful, disciplined, and democratic at all times.
