Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on April 17, 2018, formally wrote to the Prime Minister's Office seeking an urgent appointment for a joint all-party delegation from Tamil Nadu to discuss the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment on the Cauvery river dispute. The communication implemented a unanimous resolution adopted during an all-party meeting held in Chennai.

Stalin underscored that the failure of the central government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board within the six-week deadline mandated by the apex court had created severe distress across the Cauvery basin. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant an audience so that political party leaders and farmers' representatives could present the state's collective perspective directly. Stalin stressed that timely constitution of the board was vital to guarantee the livelihood of delta farmers.

The DMK leader noted that parliamentary democracy required the central leadership to engage constructively with regional stakeholders on critical interstate water sharing issues. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister would respond positively to the formal request, demonstrating constitutional sensitivity toward the urgent agricultural and drinking water needs of Tamil Nadu.
