DMK working president M.K. Stalin on April 17, 2018, strongly questioned the continued silence of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami regarding Governor Banwarilal Purohit's persistent overreach into state administrative and university affairs. Stalin asked why the Chief Minister remained paralyzed by fear instead of defending the legitimate constitutional prerogatives of the elected state government.
He demanded that the Chief Minister immediately register a formal complaint with President Ram Nath Kovind detailing the Governor's unilateral actions and executive encroachments. Stalin pointed out that by conducting district-level administrative review meetings and directly ordering inquiries into state universities, the Governor was effectively establishing a parallel administrative structure. Such actions violated established constitutional norms defining gubernatorial powers in a parliamentary system.
Stalin cautioned that an elected government that surrendered its statutory jurisdiction compromised the dignity and democratic rights of the people of Tamil Nadu. He called upon the ruling administration to display basic political courage by protesting gubernatorial overstep. Reaffirming the DMK's commitment to state autonomy, Stalin pledged that his party would continue resisting any backdoor attempt to dilute state legislative powers and protect the sovereign rights of the legislature.
