#GutkhaScam
DMK working president M.K. Stalin on April 24, 2018, strongly condemned the sudden, unceremonious transfer of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Superintendent of Police Manjunatha, who was investigating the multi-crore Gutkha bribery scam. Stalin declared that this abrupt administrative decision was an overt attempt by the state government to rescue Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar and other influential accused persons from imminent legal accountability.
He pointed out that removing a lead investigator midway through an inquiry into banned narcotics trade demonstrated the ruling regime's brazen abuse of executive power. The officer had been actively examining documentary evidence concerning monthly kickbacks paid by gutkha manufacturers to political leaders and top police brass. By displacing him without valid justification, the administration aimed to neutralize the progress made in establishing financial links.
Stalin stressed that such arbitrary transfers destroyed institutional independence and demoralized honest civil servants trying to enforce statutory laws. He reiterated that the DMK would fiercely contest these calculated administrative interferences in judicial forums, asserting that no amount of bureaucratic obstruction could permanently bury the truth behind the widespread, state-sponsored illegal tobacco bribery network.
