DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Valluvar Kottam in Chennai on April 25, 2018, to express personal solidarity with secondary grade teachers engaged in an indefinite hunger strike. The educators were protesting against entrenched pay anomalies and demanding equal pay for equal work, pointing out that teachers appointed after 2009 received substantially lower basic salaries than their senior colleagues performing identical classroom duties.
After listening to their grievances, Stalin contacted the School Education Secretary directly and urged the state administration to initiate immediate negotiations with the protesting teachers' representatives. He pointed out that it was disgraceful for a democratic government to push dedicated educators onto the streets in extreme weather while ignoring their reasonable financial demands.
Stalin emphasized that fair compensation for teachers was fundamental to sustaining quality public education across Tamil Nadu. He criticized the AIADMK administration for neglecting government employees and delaying basic wage corrections. Reaffirming the DMK's commitment to social equity in public service, Stalin promised that his party would continue to amplify the legitimate demands of the teaching community. He asserted that fair compensation remained an indispensable duty of an enlightened administration.
