DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strong condemnation on April 27, 2018, criticizing the BJP-led central government for requesting an additional two weeks from the Supreme Court to implement its verdict on the Cauvery river dispute. Stalin stated that seeking further delays directly flouted judicial orders and undermined the legitimate agricultural rights of Tamil Nadu. He described the Centre's legal maneuvering as an intentional betrayal of the state's delta farmers who depended critically on timely water releases for their seasonal crops.
The Supreme Court had directed the Union government to frame an appropriate Cauvery water-sharing mechanism, yet repeated postponements created deep resentment across the Cauvery basin. Stalin emphasized that farmers and citizens across Tamil Nadu would not remain passive spectators while their livelihoods hung in the balance. He asserted that prolonged evasion by New Delhi proved that the ruling party prioritized political considerations in neighboring states over constitutional obligations.
Stalin warned that the people of Tamil Nadu would soon demonstrate their collective resolve against such continued administrative neglect. He reiterated that the DMK would sustain peaceful democratic agitations until a fully empowered Cauvery Management Board became an operational reality.
