DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a fierce denunciation on April 30, 2018, against the Union BJP government for completely excluding Tamil—India's ancient classical tongue—from the prestigious Presidential Awards for Certificate of Honour and the Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman awards for the year 2018. Stalin pointed out that while Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and Arabic scholars were generously recognized with national honors and pensions, Tamil was systematically sidelined by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Stalin observed that Tamil possesses an unbroken literary heritage spanning more than two millennia, recognized internationally and constitutionally designated as India's first classical language in 2004 under the visionary leadership of Kalaignar Karunanidhi. Deliberately omitting Tamil scholars from central presidential recognitions demonstrated deep-seated linguistic chauvinism and stepmotherly bias toward Dravidian heritage. He asserted that no self-respecting Tamil would tolerate this continuous insult to the mother tongue.
Demanding that the Union government rectify the omission and confer presidential honors upon Tamil scholars, Stalin called upon the Centre to abandon its preferential treatment of Sanskrit over regional languages. He warned that linguistic discrimination weakens national unity. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will uncompromisingly champion the pride, dignity, and classical stature of Tamil across all platforms.
