DMK working president M.K. Stalin launched a blistering attack on May 4, 2018, against Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar, asserting that nothing could be more shameful for the state than having its custodian of public health accused of accepting monthly kickbacks to facilitate the widespread sale of banned gutkha. Stalin emphasized that gutkha and pan masala products are scientifically proven carcinogens that cause debilitating oral cancers, particularly among youth and vulnerable working classes.

Stalin highlighted documented evidence seized by central agencies demonstrating that crores of rupees were funneled directly to the Health Minister and top police commanders by gutkha manufacturers seeking protection for illegal manufacturing and distribution networks. He pointed out that while innocent citizens suffered fatal illnesses from toxic narcotics, the political leadership of the health department prioritized private enrichment over constitutional duties. The opposition leader argued that ministerial complicity in public poisoning is an unpardonable crime.

Demanding the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Vijayabaskar, Stalin insisted that the state administration cannot maintain credibility while harbouring corrupt ministers. He reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently press the ongoing CBI inquiry to ensure that every politician and officer who profited from toxic trade is held criminally accountable.
