DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced strong objection on May 6, 2018, against Anna University's unilateral decision to conduct the 2018 engineering admissions counseling entirely through an online format. Stalin characterized the move as deeply discriminatory against rural, economically poor, and Tamil-medium students who lack internet connectivity, personal computers, and digital literacy. He warned that this sudden transition creates severe structural hurdles for thousands of deserving rural aspirants.
Stalin observed that Anna University's single-window in-person counseling had historically functioned as an equitable, transparent mechanism where first-generation learners received immediate guidance on colleges, branches, and fee concessions. By abruptly scrapping physical counseling without adequate grassroots digital infrastructure, the higher education department caused widespread panic among working-class families across interior districts. He stressed that technological administrative changes should broaden access rather than erect barriers against disadvantaged youth.
Urging the university administration and state government to reconsider the decision immediately, Stalin demanded the restoration of in-person counseling alongside digital options. He stated that educational equity requires policies that account for socioeconomic disparities. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the rights of rural students and resist administrative measures that harm inclusive higher education in Tamil Nadu.
