DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced profound sorrow on May 8, 2018, over the worsening plight of agricultural communities in the Cauvery delta region as Karnataka failed to release four thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water despite explicit oral directives from the Supreme Court. Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu farmers faced severe agricultural devastation and acute drinking water scarcity while the Union and Karnataka governments disregarded statutory obligations.

Stalin observed that delta ryots who rely on river flows were pushed into acute uncertainty because monthly release schedules remained entirely unfulfilled. The failure of administrative mechanisms to enforce compliance rendered apex court assurances ineffective on the ground. He pointed out that agricultural operations across Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts were grinding to a halt due to parched canals, threatening food security and rural livelihoods.

Holding the central and state governments accountable for administrative helplessness, Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government immediately secure water through decisive legal action. He urged authorities to safeguard the survival of farming families through immediate compensation and relief. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the legitimate riparian rights of delta farmers across all constitutional arenas.
