DMK working president M.K. Stalin raised serious questions on May 12, 2018, regarding the financial backing behind an appeal filed before the Supreme Court of India against the Madras High Court judgment ordering a CBI probe into the illegal gutkha trade. Stalin expressed profound astonishment that health inspector Sivakumar, a modest public servant, could retain former Attorney General and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, whose legal appearance fees run into tens of lakhs of rupees.
Stalin observed that deploying one of the country's most prominent constitutional lawyers to represent a low-level municipal inspector gave rise to overwhelming suspicion regarding the hidden sponsors funding the litigation. He asserted that the substantial legal expenses were plainly financed by powerful beneficiaries of the illicit gutkha payoff network, including cabinet ministers and top police commanders who feared direct exposure.
Calling for an immediate financial audit into the sources funding the Supreme Court petition, Stalin stressed that the legal maneuver proved panic within the ruling AIADMK hierarchy. He reiterated that the DMK, having secured the original High Court order through public interest litigation, will counter the proxy appeal vigorously. Stalin affirmed that truth will prevail over corrupt influence.
