DMK working president M.K. Stalin exposed duplicity within the state administration on May 12, 2018, charging that Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar and Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran were using a subordinate health inspector, Sivakumar, as a legal front to derail a Central Bureau of Investigation probe. The Madras High Court had ordered a comprehensive CBI inquiry into the multi-crore gutkha scam, wherein banned tobacco manufacturers paid systemic monthly bribes to senior politicians and police officials.
Stalin stated that the citizens of Tamil Nadu were fully aware that a low-ranking health inspector lacked personal incentive to challenge a high court ruling directing an investigation into systemic corruption. He asserted that the inspector was deployed as a proxy mask by influential ministers and top-tier police brass desperate to shield themselves from federal interrogation. Stalin noted that filing an appeal before the Supreme Court was a transparent ploy to buy time and erase documentary evidence.
Demanding that the state administration cooperate fully with the judiciary, Stalin insisted that the CBI uncover the full money trail behind the gutkha syndicate. He affirmed that the DMK will remain vigilant against procedural obstruction until every corrupt official faces justice.
