People of Tamil Nadu are familiar with the BJP's efforts to protect the corrupt ADMK Government, which also incidentally does not enjoy the majority support in the Legislative Assembly. Constitutional institutions and principles are under threat from these actions.
DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized the Union BJP government on May 17, 2018, pointing out that citizens of Tamil Nadu were acutely familiar with central maneuvers to prop up the corrupt AIADMK administration. Stalin observed that the state government clearly lacked majority support on the floor of the Legislative Assembly following disqualifications and factional fissures, yet continued in office solely through central patronage and executive interference.
Stalin highlighted the parallels between the political maneuvers unfolding in Karnataka and the protracted manipulation of state institutions in Tamil Nadu. By shielding an unrepresentative regime from mandatory floor tests and constitutional scrutiny, central authorities were systematically eroding established democratic conventions. He cautioned that compromising the independence of constitutional offices to serve partisan convenience imperils the bedrock principles of parliamentary governance.
The DMK leader warned that the public will not remain passive spectators while constitutional checks and balances are subverted for political survival. He called upon civic and political forces to reject illegitimate backroom deals that subvert electoral mandates. Stalin reaffirmed the party's steadfast commitment to restoring clean, democratic governance in Tamil Nadu through legitimate constitutional processes.
