The systematic abuse of Governor's office and wanton misuse of Speaker's powers by the BJP in other states, including TamilNadu, stand exposed from recent events in Karnataka. Hope this setback helps the BJP realise its mistake of propping up an illegitimate govt in TamilNadu.
DMK working president M.K. Stalin articulated grave constitutional concerns on May 19, 2018, over the systematic abuse of the gubernatorial office and the partisan misuse of legislative speakers' authority by the ruling BJP across several Indian states. Stalin stated that manipulating constitutional positions to facilitate the formation of minority governments and engineer political defections has reduced cooperative federalism to an empty slogan.
Citing disturbing precedents in Tamil Nadu, Goa, Manipur, and Karnataka, Stalin noted that governors were routinely acting as political agents of the central ruling party rather than non-partisan custodians of the Constitution. Similarly, the discretionary powers of assembly speakers were repeatedly leveraged to disqualify opposition legislators selectively and protect unrepresentative state ministries. He argued that these calculated executive maneuvers pose an existential threat to democratic conventions and the constitutional rule of law.
Stalin urged all regional parties, democratic organizations, and legal scholars across the country to form a united front to safeguard constitutional democracy. He stated that protecting state autonomy against central overreach is essential for preserving the multi-lingual, multi-cultural fabric of India. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will remain at the forefront of the struggle to defend federal rights.
