DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on the evening of May 22, 2018, that he had canceled his scheduled travel to Bengaluru for the oath-taking ceremony of Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy following the tragic police firing in Thoothukudi. Stalin stated that the shocking loss of civilian lives had plunged his heart into profound grief, making it morally impossible to attend celebratory political gatherings while Tamil Nadu mourned its dead.
Prioritizing his duty toward grieving citizens, Stalin announced that he would immediately travel to Thoothukudi to visit wounded protesters in hospital wards and offer direct condolences to bereaved households. He emphasized that the trauma inflicted upon innocent families required the physical presence and moral support of political leaders who genuinely care for public welfare. Stalin noted that offering solidarity to oppressed citizens took precedence over inter-state political events.
The DMK leader condemned the state government for its callous indifference to civilian suffering. He stated that standing alongside affected communities during their darkest hours was an uncompromised moral commitment. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will mobilize its party machinery and legal resources to assist the victims and ensure that justice is achieved for every grieving family.
