DMK working president M.K. Stalin released a blunt public condemnation on May 23, 2018, describing the police firing on anti-Sterlite demonstrators in Thoothukudi as a mass murder of innocent people orchestrated under the incompetent leadership of Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami. Stalin shared documentary visuals showing the gruesome aftermath of the police action, which left thirteen civilians dead and scores severely injured by live ammunition.
Stalin contended that the administration's total failure to engage with the public over a hundred days of peaceful agitations culminated in state-sanctioned bloodshed. By deploying sharpshooters armed with self-loading rifles against unarmed marchers demanding basic ecological rights, the government exhibited astonishing callousness and administrative delinquency. Stalin emphasized that no democratic administration can justify shooting its own people to safeguard the commercial interests of a corporate polluter.
Calling for the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Palaniswami and his cabinet, Stalin stated that the moral authority of the government has been permanently extinguished. He insisted that independent legal accountability must be enforced against those who ordered and executed the massacre. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will champion the cause of the victims across all constitutional forums.
