DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a blistering condemnation of the Tamil Nadu government on May 23, 2018, accusing the police department of carrying out a targeted manhunt against unarmed citizens under the pretext of crowd dispersal in Thoothukudi. Stalin stated that police personnel had deliberately aimed lethal shots at specific demonstrators to execute them, demonstrating that the administration under Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami is unfit to govern civilized society.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage confirmed that police officers mounted utility vehicles and fired high-caliber rifles at protesters who posed no imminent threat to life. Stalin stressed that such premeditated execution of civilians represents a barbarous assault on constitutional democracy and human dignity. He highlighted that the victims had merely exercised their legitimate right to assemble and demand a clean environment free from industrial hazards.
Stalin pledged that the DMK will wage an unyielding struggle to ensure that every police official and administrative mastermind involved in the shooting is prosecuted and punished according to the law. He reiterated that justice will not be complete until criminal responsibility is fixed at the highest levels of governance.
