DMK working president M.K. Stalin announced on the night of May 23, 2018, that the opposition will conduct a comprehensive statewide general strike on May 25, converting a previously planned demonstration into a total shutdown. Stalin explained that escalating police violence and recurring gunfire in Thoothukudi required an amplified democratic response to demand the permanent closure of the Sterlite copper plant and the immediate resignation of the incompetent AIADMK ministry.
Stalin observed that the continuation of police firings across multiple days proved that the state government had completely lost control of civil administration. Rather than restoring calm through constructive dialogue, authorities deployed coercive measures that deepened civilian trauma. The DMK leader stated that a statewide bandh was imperative to demonstrate collective public solidarity with the grieving families and hold the political leadership directly accountable.
Calling upon merchants, transport operators, and civic groups across Tamil Nadu to participate actively in the shutdown, Stalin urged citizens to maintain peaceful discipline throughout the protest. He affirmed that the DMK and its allies will relentlessly pursue the struggle against state violence until the polluting industrial unit is permanently dismantled and the victims receive full justice.
