DMK working president M.K. Stalin addressed agitated demonstrators in Chennai on May 24, 2018, boldly challenging state authorities to fire upon elected public representatives if they believed lethal violence could suppress legitimate public anger. Stalin stated that if the police could shoot innocent civilians who peacefully campaigned for clean air and water, they should turn their weapons on legislators who stand alongside the people.
Stalin asserted that attempts to quell popular protests through force in Thoothukudi would only ignite widespread democratic resistance throughout Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the DMK refuses to be intimidated by authoritarian police tactics and will continue demonstrations until full justice is delivered to the families of the deceased and injured. The opposition leader condemned the government for treating peaceful demonstrators as enemy insurgents.
Warning the AIADMK leadership that public dissent cannot be extinguished through rifle bullets, Stalin reiterated that democratic resistance will expand across every district. He called upon police personnel to respect constitutional safeguards and cease unlawful actions against the public. Stalin pledged that the DMK will stand as an impenetrable shield defending citizens' democratic rights against executive tyranny.
