DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued a passionate appeal to the people of Tamil Nadu on May 24, 2018, urging them to observe a total statewide shutdown on May 25 to protest the horrific police firing in Thoothukudi. Stalin called upon merchant associations, transport unions, agricultural workers, and civic organizations to close business operations in a unified display of democratic solidarity with the families of the thirteen civilians killed by state police forces.
The statewide general strike was jointly convened by the DMK, the Congress, the Left parties, and allied democratic organizations to express collective outrage against the AIADMK administration. Stalin stressed that closing markets and halting commercial transit across the state would send an unmistakable message to the government that the public will not tolerate state violence. He noted that the anti-Sterlite movement represented legitimate concerns regarding industrial poisoning and public health.
Stalin requested all citizens to conduct protests peacefully and demonstrate unyielding resolve against administrative brutality. He stated that the struggle transcends partisan boundaries, uniting all Tamils in demanding accountability. Stalin affirmed that the opposition alliance will stand steadfastly with the affected citizens until complete justice is achieved.
