Historical Record
At the party's founding, C. N. Annadurai took the post of general secretary, which functioned as the DMK's highest executive office. The president's chair was deliberately left vacant as a symbolic gesture inviting Periyar to lead. Annadurai held the general secretary post until his death in 1969.
Significance
Established the general secretary as the DMK's pivotal leadership office and confirmed Annadurai's undisputed command of the new party.
