On 1 May 1962, in his maiden speech in the Rajya Sabha, C. N. Annadurai reiterated the DMK's demand for an independent Dravida Nadu and argued the case for Dravidian self-determination. The speech is remembered as a landmark statement of the party's ideology on the national stage.
