Soon after the AIADMK's win in the 1980 Assembly election, the Indian National Congress ended its alliance with the DMK and aligned with M. G. Ramachandran's AIADMK. The realignment left the DMK without its principal national ally.

Significance
The Congress switching sides isolated the DMK and gave the AIADMK a powerful electoral partnership, deepening the DMK's difficulties through the rest of the 1980s in opposition.
