Historical Record
In the March 1977 Lok Sabha election, the DMK contested in Tamil Nadu allied with the Indian National Congress (Organisation) and the CPI(M). The DMK-led front won only 5 of the state's 39 seats, with the DMK itself winning just 2 seats and around 18.6% of the vote, while the AIADMK-Congress combine swept 34 seats.
Significance
The result marked a sharp collapse in the DMK's parliamentary strength following the Emergency and the dismissal of its government, and signalled the AIADMK's emergence as Tamil Nadu's dominant force.
