In the December 1984 Lok Sabha election, the DMK contested in Tamil Nadu allied with the Janata Party and the Communist parties. The DMK-led front won only 2 seats; the DMK polled about 25.9% of the vote, while the INC-AIADMK alliance won 37 of the state's 39 seats.

Significance
The result reinforced the dominance of the INC-AIADMK partnership in Tamil Nadu and confirmed the DMK's weak position nationally through the mid-1980s.
