In the 2011 Tamil Nadu Assembly election the AIADMK-led alliance won 203 seats while the DMK-led alliance was reduced to 31 seats, ending the DMK's 2006-2011 government. Karunanidhi retained his Tiruvarur seat by a margin of 50,249 votes.
