In the January 1980 Lok Sabha election, the DMK allied with the Indian National Congress (Indira). The alliance won 37 of Tamil Nadu's 39 seats; the DMK itself won 16 seats with about 23% of the vote, while the Congress (Indira) won 20 seats.
1980 ஜனவரி மக்களவைத் தேர்தலில், திமுக இந்திய தேசிய காங்கிரஸ் (இந்திரா) கட்சியுடன் கூட்டணி அமைத்தது. இந்தக் கூட்டணி தமிழ்நாட்டின் 39 இடங்களில் 37 இடங்களை வென்றது; திமுக 16 இடங்களை சுமார் 23% வாக்குகளுடன் வென்றது; காங்கிரஸ் (இந்திரா) 20 இடங்களை வென்றது.
Significance
It was a rare bright spot for the DMK in the opposition era, restoring a substantial parliamentary presence; yet the alliance's success would not carry over to the state Assembly election months later.
