At its conference in Tiruchirappalli in 1956, the DMK formally resolved to enter electoral politics and contest elections. This decision was the defining departure from Periyar's Dravidar Kazhagam, which had rejected electoral participation. It cleared the path for the DMK's electoral debut in 1957.
