Historical Record

For the 2004 Lok Sabha election the DMK left the NDA and formed the Democratic Progressive Alliance with the Congress and other parties, which swept all 39 Tamil Nadu seats. The DMK joined the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre with several union ministers.

Significance

Took the DMK into a decade-long partnership with the Congress at the Centre and gave Tamil Nadu strong representation in the union cabinet.
