Historical Record
In November 1963 the DMK formally dropped its long-standing demand for a separate, sovereign Dravida Nadu. The shift followed the Sino-Indian War and the passage of the Sixteenth Amendment, the anti-secessionist amendment that barred parties with separatist aims from contesting elections. The DMK turned instead to demands for autonomy within the Indian Union and to the anti-Hindi cause.
Significance
A pivotal ideological turn that made the DMK a constitutionally compliant party, removing the main obstacle to its path to power within India.
