In the 1957 Madras Legislative Assembly election, held on 31 March 1957, the DMK contested its first election since its 1949 founding. Not yet recognised by the Election Commission, its candidates stood as independents. The party won 15 seats with roughly 14 percent of the vote. Future leaders M. Karunanidhi and K. Anbazhagan won their first assembly seats.
1957 மார்ச் 31 அன்று நடைபெற்ற 1957 சென்னை சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தலில், 1949-இல் தோற்றுவிக்கப்பட்டதிலிருந்து திமுக தனது முதல் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிட்டது. தேர்தல் ஆணையத்தால் இன்னும் அங்கீகரிக்கப்படாததால், அதன் வேட்பாளர்கள் சுயேச்சைகளாகப் போட்டியிட்டனர். கட்சி சுமார் 14 சதவீத வாக்குகளுடன் 15 இடங்களில் வெற்றி பெற்றது. எதிர்கால தலைவர்களான மு. கருணாநிதி மற்றும் கோ. அன்பழகன் தங்கள் முதல் சட்டமன்ற இடங்களில் வெற்றி பெற்றனர்.

Marked the DMK's entry into electoral politics and gave the young party its first foothold in the legislature.
