Historical Record

Following its showing in the 1957 election, the DMK was recognised as a political party and allotted the rising sun (Udhaya Suriyan) as its election symbol, reportedly registered on 2 March 1958. The symbol had been requested by Annadurai and is linked to a banned Karunanidhi play, 'Udhaya Suriyan'. The DMK contested the 1962 elections as a fully recognised party.

Significance

Gave the DMK formal recognition and the rising sun symbol that became its enduring identity for decades.
