Historical Record

On 15 July 1953 the DMK organised a demonstration at Kallakudi, Tiruchirappalli district, against the town being renamed Dalmiapuram after industrialist Ramakrishna Dalmia. M. Karunanidhi, then 29, led student activists who erased the Hindi name from the railway station board and lay on the tracks. Police firing killed two demonstrators and injured several others; Karunanidhi was among those arrested and jailed.

Significance

The agitation made M. Karunanidhi a household name in Tamil Nadu and was an early demonstration of the DMK's capacity to mobilise on anti-North and linguistic-pride issues.
