Historical Record
Soon after the July 1983 anti-Tamil riots in Sri Lanka, known as Black July, M. Karunanidhi and DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan resigned their Tamil Nadu Assembly seats in protest at the failure of the union and state governments to defend Eelam Tamils. Karunanidhi was subsequently elected to the Legislative Council, where he served as Leader of the Opposition.
Significance
The resignations marked a defining act of the DMK's solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils and made the Eelam Tamil cause a central plank of the party's opposition-era politics.
